A Light Extinguished Too Soon: Honoring a Young Life and Championing Child Safety

OUACHITA PARISH, La. – The holiday season, a time for joy and togetherness, was tragically eclipsed for a Louisiana family on December 28th. On the bustling LA-546, the Whittlesey family’s four-year-old son, buckled in his car seat, embarked on a journey that heartbreakingly ended too soon. A collision, details of which remain under investigation, took this child’s precious life, leaving a void in the hearts of loved ones.

While words cannot begin to mend the shattered hearts of the Whittlesey family, his memory illuminates a vital cause: child safety on our roads. In honor of the Whittlesey’s, we must collectively pledge to make our roads safer for our youngest passengers.

Thankfully, we can take decisive steps. Remember, these crucial steps go a long way in ensuring the safety of your child on the road:

• Choose the right car seat: Always select a car seat that meets federal safety standards and is appropriate for your child’s age, weight, and height.
• Install the car seat correctly: Follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully to ensure a secure and stable installation. Many resources are available online and in your community to help you with installation, such as car seat check events.
• Keep your child buckled up every time: Every trip, no matter how short, requires proper buckling using all available harness straps and the chest clip.
• Rear-facing matters: Keep your child rear-facing for as long as possible, ideally until age two or reaching the car seat’s height and weight limit. This position significantly reduces the risk of injury in a crash.
• Never place a rear-facing car seat in the front seat: Airbags can pose a serious danger to young children in a rear-facing car seat.
