The Incident

JEFFERSON PARISH, LA – April 17, 2025 — Louisiana State Police are investigating a tragic pedestrian accident that occurred early Thursday morning on the upper level of U.S. Highway 90 Business (US 90B) near Stumpf Boulevard.

According to authorities, 24-year-old Shamond Jacobs was walking in the eastbound lanes around 5 a.m. when he was struck by a Chevrolet Silverado. Sadly, Jacobs was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Silverado was reportedly uninjured.

Pedestrian Accidents in Louisiana: Who Is Liable?

Pedestrian accidents—especially fatal ones—are devastating and far too common in Jefferson Parish and throughout the New Orleans metro area. Determining fault in these cases can be complex and often depends on factors such as:

  • Time of day and visibility

  • Driver speed and attentiveness

  • Lighting and road conditions

  • Pedestrian location and behavior

Even if a pedestrian was walking along a roadway or wearing dark clothing, drivers have a legal obligation to remain alert, drive safely, and avoid collisions when possible.

Can the Family File a Wrongful Death Claim?

Under Louisiana wrongful death law, certain family members—including parents, children, or spouses—may be entitled to file a claim if a loved one is killed due to another party’s negligence.

A successful claim could recover compensation for:

  • Funeral and burial expenses

  • Lost income and financial support

  • Loss of companionship or guidance

  • Emotional distress

  • Pain and suffering of the deceased prior to death

If evidence shows the driver was speeding, distracted, or otherwise negligent, the family may have grounds for legal action—even if the victim was partially at fault.

Why Early Investigation Is Crucial

Police investigations often take weeks, but private legal investigations can begin immediately. A skilled wrongful death attorney can:

  • Preserve surveillance footage or vehicle data

  • Interview witnesses

  • Reconstruct the accident

  • Review toxicology and autopsy reports

These steps are critical for ensuring your loved one’s story is fully understood and your legal rights are protected.

Our Thoughts Are With the Families

Our thoughts and deepest condolences go out to the family and loved ones of Shamond Jacobs during this difficult time. We extend our sympathies to all affected by this tragic loss.
