Turns out even Louisiana ain’t immune to Old Man Winter’s icy grip! While this recent freeze might have thrown us for a loop, a New Englander like me has seen my fair share of snow and slush. So, I figured I’d share some trusty tips to help us Southerners navigate these wintry roads with confidence.

Before You Buckle Up:

  • Winterize your car: Get those tires checked! Tire pressure decreases during cold weather and bald tires become extra slick! Replace your washer fluid so that it will not freeze and don’t forget a scraper and emergency kit.
  • Plan your route: Check weather reports and traffic updates. Avoid bridges and elevated roads, where ice tends to lurk. If you can, stay home.
  • Gear up: Bring winter clothes, even if you don’t think you’ll need them where you are heading. Nothing is worse than trying to change a tire in freezing temperatures without gloves. Also, a fully charged phone is your winter lifeline.

Hitting the Road:

  • Slow down, way down: Ice is slicker than a boiled onion, so take it easy. Gentle acceleration, smooth braking, and wide turns are your new mantras.
  • Increase your space: Double, even triple, the usual following distance. Remember, stopping on ice takes three times longer!
  • Ditch cruise control: It can mess with your traction in slippery conditions. Focus on the road and feel the tires, y’all.
  • Beware the black ice: Those seemingly dry patches might be hiding a wicked layer of ice. Bridges, shaded areas, and intersections are prime suspects.
  • Hills become mountains: Take them slow and steady, downshifting to avoid spinning your wheels.
  • Headlights on, fog lights optional: Even during the day, headlights make you more visible in the potentially reduced visibility.
  • Stay calm and collected: Panicking won’t melt the ice. If something goes wrong, just breathe, call for help, and focus on staying safe.

Bonus Tips:

  • Park strategically: Avoid uphill parking and choose flat, well-lit areas. Don’t forget the parking brake!
  • Clear your windows: Don’t underestimate the power of good visibility. Scrape that ice, defrost fully, and adjust mirrors before setting off.
  • Help others: If you see someone stranded, offer assistance if it’s safe to do so. We’re all in this together!

Remember, it’s better to be late than be a statistic. So, take it slow, adjust your habits, and get there safely!

“My attorney with Malvin Law was beyond impressive. I was involved in a car accident and from the first call my attorney Max was “ALL OVER IT” he handled all the logistics, set me up with a rehab facility and I began treatment within 72 hours of my accident. Past that point he checked in with me weekly not to update me necessarily, but just to see how I was doing and feeling. He got me the best settlement he could and really fought for my best interest. Highly recommended! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️”
