The Incident
On February 2nd, 2024, a three-vehicle crash occurred on I-49 northbound near Lafayette Parish, Louisiana. The accident happened shortly after 6:00 AM and tragically resulted in the death of 58-year-old Artie Gunnells.
Cause Under Investigation
The initial investigation suggests 20-year-old Markayla Johnson, driving a Kia Optima northbound, crossed the centerline and struck a Jeep Wagoneer. The Kia then veered off the road, crossed the median, and collided head-on with Gunnells’ Honda Ridgeline traveling southbound. The cause of Johnson’s maneuver remains under investigation.
Aftermath
Gunnells, who was properly restrained, died at the scene. Both Johnson and her juvenile passenger sustained serious injuries due to not wearing seatbelts. The driver of the Jeep suffered minor injuries.

- Never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
